The importance of visual aids to your conference
When it comes to holding a conference, it’s important that you are able to engage and interact with your audience, to keep the interested in what you are saying. No matter how well-worded or constructed a given speech is, after several hours many of your clients may start to lose interest, one way that you can try to avoid this is by mixing it up a little with a range of visual aids. These visual aids can offer a different approach to your conference, keeping the attention of your clients and offering them something a little different.
What are some common visual aids?
There are a range of visual aids that you could use throughout your conference and some of the most common aids include:
- DVDs – if your clients are starting to tire of a speech then they may find a DVD a more interactive and interesting approach. Humans are very visual and having something played out or explained as a video can often be far more effective that having it read aloud
- Projectors – allow you to display your information to a wider audience. In some situations overhead projectors can also allow you to mark, circle and highlight areas that you would like your audience to pay particular attention to
- Laptops – visual presentations and slide shows can be easily played out in front of a large audience by connecting a projection screen into your laptop, allowing you to use a range of visual tools including images, graphs, diagrams and videos.
- Whiteboards – if you are looking to create a visual demonstration or to draw an example, whiteboards can be a great aid. They can also allow multiple members of staff to participate
- Flip charts – if technology isn’t for you then there are many other options available flip charts are a great start, they are generally large stacks of paper which can be flipped over to show the next page, containing diagrams and drawings as necessary.
How can visual aids really help me?
Visual aids can offer a great alternative to a traditional speech and they can help support and demonstrate the point that you are trying to convey in a way that words sometimes can’t. Diagrams and pictures can help to visually display a situation and in some cases many people find this far easier to understand than a simple explanation.
The technology is available – why not use it?
With the introduction of many aspects of modern technology there has never been a better time to make conferences as interactive and informative as possible. Gone are the days of long-winded, drawn out speeches and complicated explanations, we now have a wide variety of audio visual aids at our fingertips, right on hand to help us with our presentations, so why not use them?
