Communities around the country have seized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, courtesy of Channel 4, to get involved in the commissioning of a work of art. But not just any work of art. A big work of art. A big, significant work of public art !
The Big Art Project is an ambitious public art commissioning initiative from Channel 4, supported by Arts Council England and The Art Fund.
A group of 15 young people from across Burnley, working with Creative Partnerships East Lancashire and Burnley Borough Council were chosen to work on this project and it is an opportunity for local people to take control and to tell of their own experiences of living in a town too often remembered for old newsreels of racial disturbances.
The entire town of Burnley has become a canvas for magical paintings that appear and disappear throughout the day and night. Some as big as a house, others as small as a door, these paintings reveal a hidden side of Burnley, offering viewers the opportunity to explore the town in a whole new light.
The chimney at Lodge House, was chosen to host part of The Big Art Project. Anvic Developments, Managing Director, Paul Dawson was thrilled to be involved and commented that; “Lodge House is conventional office space and houses many Blue Chip companies. We were delighted to have the opportunity to be involved with this project and to bring community and artistic elements into our building.”
Burnley was the first of seven works of art across the UK to be revealed as part of the Big Art Project and the documentary following the development of Burnleys project, "Invisible", will be shown on Channel 4 in late 2009.
