Greener homes are certainly in the spotlight these days, but what about your office , where you spend the rest of your time? Here at Anvic, we have made a commitment to making environmental changes right across all our properties and we are delighted to have already seen a difference.

Our new ‘green’ policies include installing sensor lighting in offices and corridors, fitting low energy light fittings and bulbs, installing new energy efficient heating, installing double glazed windows to improve our buildings’ insulation, and installing time clocks to reduce electrical usage. We also have an active policy of recycling paper and cardboard, as well as toner cartridges and we are working with an energy consultant to assist with energy efficiency within all our buildings.

Companies who would like to follow suit can also take note of the following tips:-

• Be bright about light Artificial lighting accounts for 44% of the electricity used in office buildings. Turn off the lights when you're leaving any room and utilise natural light when you can.

• Maximise computer efficiency Turn off your computer—and the power strip it's plugged into—when you leave for the day. During the day, set your computer to go to sleep automatically during short breaks which can cut energy use by 70%. If possible, try to invest in energy-saving computers, monitors and printers and make sure that old equipment is properly recycled.

• Print smarter When possible, print on both sides or use the blank side of old documents for scrap paper. Avoid colour printing and print in draft mode whenever feasible. Consider switching to a lighter stock of paper or alternatives made from bamboo, hemp, organic cotton, or kenaf. Recycle toner and ink cartridges or get old ones re-filled and think before you print. When you receive junk mail make sure you request to be removed from the mailing list.
